Determining the Proper Role of God in America

This apparent dichotomy has divided the pubic with regard to what to do about the recognition of God in society and especially government. Being divided on such a fundamental issue is not good for America's image in the world. Moreover, the wrong decision made by legislators today may have long term unwanted consequences.
In general, we need to determine if America should recognize God officially. In specific, should the mention of “God” be included in the Pledge of Allegiance, and should the words “In God We Trust” be printed on the U.S. Dollar and minted coins?
As we are about to see, there is no dichotomy, and there is one correct solution if we base it purely on science.
Definitions First
The way to identify a problem and its solution begins with (1) defining the words we use and (2) having each word mean just one thing. We can demonstrate with the familiar word “cheap.”
If a man points to something and says, “It is cheap.”, what does he mean? Is it inexpensive or poorly made? The problem is the word “cheap” has two possible meanings. Because there are two possible meanings, we are left confused as to what the man is saying. Should we purchase the item because it is low cost, or should we not purchase it because it is low quality?
Similarly, the problem of not knowing what to do about “God” is that the words “theology” and “religion” each have more than one meaning. Consequently, when speaking about theology and religion, we become uncertain and confused. In desperation, we fall back on personal biases and beliefs, leaving the issue of “the proper role of God in America” unresolved.
Note: Different words that that have similar but not exact meanings tend to become commingled over time because people are lazy in their selection of the words they use. Unfortunately, the commingling of meanings always results in confusion that exacerbates social problems. For example, the words racism, bigotry, bias, prejudice and discrimination each have a unique meaning. Yet, because people have been commingling them for decades, the words have lost their uniqueness. The consequences are significant, beginning with our inability (or refusal) to discuss sensitive issues for fear of being misunderstood and mislabeled.
Clarifying the Meanings of Words
For purposes of clarity, we will differentiate the words theology and religion. Specifically, we will isolate each word's core meaning and exclude all others that have become associated with it over time.
We will illustrate the process of how we can be sure to assign unique but accurate labels by going back to our previous example – the word “cheap.”
Cheap:
(1) Low cost
(2) Low quality
Analysis
Another word that means “low cost” exists. That word is “inexpensive.” In contrast, there isn't another word that means “low quality.”
Note: Can you think of another word that means low quality?
Therefore, it only makes sense to assign the unique meaning “low quality” to the word “cheap.” Now, if a man says, “The item is cheap.” We know he means the item is low quality. If the item is priced low, the man would say, “The item is inexpensive.”
It is critical to note we did not make up a new word or change core meanings. We simply cleaned up the language.
Note: Isn't this what etymologists and lexicologists should be doing? The English language is comprised of over 600,000 words, making it the most expressive of the modern languages. Cleaning up the definitions of “problematic words” (such as racism, democracy, republic, and marriage) would enhance clarity, enabling society to resolve important issues.
We are establishing key concepts. “The proper role of God in America” is an important matter. Upon conclusion of this analysis, the correct answer will become glaring and irrefutable.
Differentiating Theology from Religion
The following definition is a composite. It has been pared down to be concise, making it easy to digest. Then it was groomed to be applicable to our purposes. The result is a short, clear and precise definition of “theology.”
Theology:
— The nature and expectations of a force or power beyond the physical world.
The key questions regarding theology:
“What is God like, and what does God expect of us?”
For purposes of clarity, religion must mean something other than theology. So then, what is the definition of religion without commingling the meaning of theology?
The way we use the adjective “religious” and the adverb “religiously” when referring to mundane activities is revealing. To illustrate, to say a person is religious in exercising every morning before taking a shower and having breakfast indicates he or she follows a specific routine. Likewise, something done “religiously,” suggests it is done in a preset fashion – following a pattern or system of actions and practices.
If we do not commingle the meaning of theology, we arrive at the Merriam-Webster's definition of religion.
Religion:
— An organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods. ref
The key question regarding religion:
“How do we worship God?”
Conclusion
Now, when speaking about matters pertaining to theology and religion, concepts are clear. To illustrate, Christianity, Judaism and Islam each have an understanding of who God is and what God expects from members (theology), and each sets forth a set of rules and practices for its members to follow (religion).
Concepts become muddied when we refer to Christianity, Judaism and Islam only as “religions.” In truth, each is a theology first. Overlooking this fact has resulted in confusion. Technically, we should refer to Christianity, Judaism and Islam as “theologies” when discussing who God is and what God expects of members. We should refer to Christianity, Judaism and Islam as “religions” only when the way members worship is the subject of discussion.
Application
The U.S. Constitution states in the first Amendment:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…”
Now that we have differentiated the meaning of the word “theology” from “religion,” the intention of the First Amendment becomes clear. Government is not to establish a particular organized system of beliefs, ceremonies and rules used to worship a god or group of gods.
Contrary to those who have mingled the meanings of theology and religion, the U.S. Constitution does not prevent government from recognizing God. On the contrary, the founders stated unequivocally in the “Declaration of Independence” they believed in a higher power with certain characteristics and expectations (theology).
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…”
When Patriots say, “We will acknowledge a just, peaceable and tolerant God,…” we are promising to embrace a particular theology. We have no intention of promoting a specific religion.
Note: This most important distinction is lost if we commingle the meanings of theology and religion.
Subscribing to a particular theology, we must define our view of God and what we believe to be God's expectations of us.
Note: Again, we are not establishing how to worship God. That option is voluntary, and left to America's citizens as per the First Amendment.
Ultimately, the characteristics we attribute to God are arbitrary. We choose the following characteristics to achieve certain benefits to be addressed later in this analysis.
Our View of God
God is “just,” “peaceable ” and “tolerant.”
Note: It just so happens these are the same characteristics of the God the founders of America recognized and the God of the New Testament. However, tradition is not a legitimate reason to justify embracing them. As you are about to see, the “arbitrarily selected characteristics“ of God serve us in several ways.
God's Expectations of Us
Based on the characteristics we have assigned to God, we can deduce what is expected of us. The following statements are merely logical consequences of a just, peaceable and tolerant God.
Regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, capability, contribution, religious persuasion or sexual orientation, God regards us to be equally valuable as human beings. As such, we are expected to regard one another and interact with each other accordingly.
If all human beings are equally valuable (as human beings) we must respect all people, nations, cultures and spiritual beliefs.
Because we are to regard everyone as equal human beings, no one religion can be favored. As such, we must live by a moral code of secular laws independent of a specific religion (way to worship).
Being blessed with abundance, position and opportunity, God expects us to work to ease the suffering of others and correct the injustices perpetrated upon them while respecting their autonomy.
Note: The additional words “to work (to ease the suffering of others…)” implies it is not our only or even primary goal and duty. Merely lending a hand, setting an example, keeping an eye on, and helping out is required.
We are allowed to defend ourselves from aggressors and deter those who would cause us harm. However, force should be the last resort and tempered with caution, compassion and reason.
Note: Stating “force should be our last resort” does not mean we may not be proactive. On the contrary, there are circumstances wherein being proactive is necessary for defense and security.
Note: This statement of expectations defines our view of God (theology). It is complete. It would be wrong to think there are implications, ramifications or components missing. Notice there are no indications regarding how citizens should worship if at all (i.e. religion).
Benefits
Recognizing God serves America (and the world) in at least two ways.
First: Rights from God cannot be taken away by mortal man (via science or legislation). We believe (as did the founders of America and the framers of the U.S. Constitution) all men are created equal in the eyes of God. Consequently, every person must be regarded as having equal value as a human being. This belief is neither arbitrary nor capricious because it comes from God.
Note: In godless countries such as Russia, China, North Korea and Cuba, the individual serves the state. The rights enjoyed by citizens are granted by and come from government. Therefore, they can be taken away at any time, as they often are “for the greater good.”
Second: Our belief in a just, peaceable and tolerant God assures nations have nothing to fear from the most awesome military power the world has ever known.
It is human nature to abuse one's power. The familiar adage “absolute power corrupts absolutely” reflects this tendency. Our belief in a just, peaceable and tolerant God essentially ties our hands as a nation. America is effectively rendered non-threatening because we recognize a just, peaceable and tolerant God.
A Note to Atheists
We are not asking you to change what you believe. What we are asking is for you to consider two new points of view.
Point #1:
Although you may argue the concept of God is illogical and even fanciful, we urge you to consider how citizens and the world benefit from America embracing the notion of a God that is just, peaceable and tolerant. Then reread “His Expectations of Us” (above). In balance, are you still so offended you are willing to trade the two critical benefits for principle?
From a purely scientific view, we should abandon the mention of Santa Clause to children. Yet we perpetuate the myth because of the joy it brings to children around the world.
The point is, sometimes it is advantageous to embrace a myth despite scientific evidence to the contrary. We are not comparing God to Santa Claus, nor are we suggesting God is a mythical figure. We simply are saying it serves America to revere a higher power that is just, peaceable and tolerant.
Point #2:
Countries are much like corporations in they are unique entities, separate and distinct from the individuals who manage them. Like it or not, every country is founded on a theology. Atheism is the theology of no god.
Choosing atheism for yourself is inconsequential to others. However, choosing atheism for America will change its theology from a God that is just, peaceable and tolerant to a theology of no god. Doing so will transfer what are now “God-given rights” to government.
Do you really want to go down that road relying on trust? Do you believe those running government will protect you today and tomorrow? Do you trust implicitly the whim of the citizen majority? What if you are wrong? Our belief in a just, peaceable and tolerant God is a safeguard. What will it cost to keep it in place? What might it cost to give it up?
We agree religion must not be part of government in any way. We agree religion must not influence legislation or public policy to any degree. Can we also agree it is better to be safe than sorry, especially when it costs us nothing to be safe and 150 million citizens were slaughtered by government in just the last century?
Conclusion
The aspiration of the founders of America was to create a society that was free, civil and prosperous. They knew, to remain free from the tyranny of government, it was necessary for our rights to come from God. The Judea/Christian theology was a perfect fit because the God of Jews and Christians is just, peaceable and tolerant.
Belief in a just God (a theology) reminds us to keep a moral sense in which we follow a path of fairness, truth and righteousness. Such a code has nothing to do with religion and the way one worships God if at all. Choosing to behave as a decent human being and worship are unconnected ideas.
A just God equates to equal treatment for all citizens. If the God we embraced assigned different values to the various ethnicities and beliefs and practices, there would be continual discord. A just God (a theology) puts this matter to rest.
A just God is charitable as opposed to selfish. Imagine a society in which the activities of citizens were all about worship rather than helping fellow citizens achieve their potential.
Belief in a peaceable God is essential today because America holds the position of “dominant nation among nations.” If the God we embraced advocated the subjugation of others, nations with a lessor military would rightly fear America, and doubt and mistrust would rule in place of faith and cooperation. Moreover, a nation under the guidance of a god that advocates aggression would always be in warring mode, precluding it from being civil and prosperous. A peaceable God (a theology) eliminates this concern.
A third requirement for America to be free, civil and prosperous is for citizens to be tolerant of the opinions and beliefs of others. If the god we embraced was intolerant, society would always be in turmoil and citizens would suffer. A tolerant God resolves this potential problem.
Theology Matters
America's code of justice is the result of our belief in a just, peaceable and tolerant God. To achieve the goals of liberty, civility and prosperity, America's system of justice had to be void of religious beliefs, and all citizens must be treated equally. These attributes make America's laws “a secular moral code.”
Note: Remember, our belief in God is limited to God being just, peaceable and tolerant, with the implication God expects the same from us.
Citizens in America are obligated to adhere to America's secular moral code. Citizens who abide by some other code of justice operate outside their obligation as citizens. In short, theologies in opposition to America's fair and equitable laws are problematic.
As we can see, theology matters. For example, a theology in which God commands citizens to conquer the world for him and to treat citizens differently according to their ethnicity and religion does not lead to a code of justice that is fair and equitable for all. On the contrary, such a theology is incompatible with life in America.
It is the nature of human beings to have preferences and be biased. We may even be prejudicial, harboring dislikes without objectivity. These are natural events that cannot and need not be legislated.
Note: How would we go about policing prejudices? You cannot legislate how someone feels. In fact, as advocates of tolerance, we must be tolerant of people regardless of their prejudices.
In contrast, intolerance is prejudice demonstrated. Intolerance for the beliefs, customs or ethnicity of other citizens operating within the confines of America's fair and equitable laws (secular moral code) must not be allowed.
The familiar saying “America is a land of laws, not of men.” reflects the assumption all citizens are subject to the same secular moral code. If all citizens operate under America's secular moral code, then tolerance is automatic. The matter of tolerance becomes an issue only if citizens adhere to different moral codes.
Citizens who reject the beliefs, customs and cultures of law-abiding citizens should be reminded all citizens must abide by America's secular moral code (fair and equitable laws) or seek citizenship elsewhere. This should not be a problem because citizenship in America is voluntary.
A Final Thought
The characteristics we attribute to God mirror his expectations of us (theology). These characteristics are a matter of choice. We can believe God is just or corrupt, peaceable or warlike, or tolerant or intolerant.
The choice the founders made with regard to who God is and what God expects from us (theology) shaped America's personality and determined its potential. A just, peaceable and tolerant God is necessary as we go forward if America is to remain free, civil and prosperous.
Only a just, peaceable and tolerant God is congruent with the ambition of the founders who hoped to bestow upon citizens and future generations the blessings of America. To eliminate God from society will make tyranny possible (and eventually likely), putting us at the mercy of those in charge. The future of our nation and civilization is at stake.
…ensure all citizens enjoy equal rights and privileges,…
Every citizen in America, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religious persuasion and sexual orientation is born a first-class citizen in good standing. As such, they should expect to receive equal treatment in every regard. The end.
The beauty and elegance of a republic (in contrast to a democracy) becomes evident when we consider the rights and privileges enjoyed by citizens in the minority. It will prove helpful to first look at how decisions are made in a democracy.
In a democracy, the citizen majority makes the rules after elections are over. Although representatives elected by the citizen majority gather and cast votes, they vote in accordance with the citizen majority will. Consequently, those in the minority are oppressed. Things work differently in a republic.
In a republic, representatives do not represent the people directly. Rather than represent the citizens, they do what is good for their district and state. In this way, they represent all the people equally, albeit indirectly. Consequently, in a republic, the citizen majority has no special authority after elections are over. More important, those in the minority are not oppressed.
Stated another way, there are no minorities in a republic. Because America is a republic, there are no minorities in America. Every citizen is regarded as equal with one equal vote.
…adopt a moderate abortion policy that guarantees choice for women before transferring rights to the unborn,…
The abortion issue has many facets, too many to articulate here. A full analysis can be found in A More Perfect Union (see the “About/Learn” section). However, we need to enumerate the key points.
Women need some time to choose their destiny. An unexpected pregnancy should not forcibly direct a woman's entire life forever. She must retain the right to choose who should father her children, her extended family, her economic status, and longtime mate.
Moreover, a decision to have an abortion early in a pregnancy cannot be controlled by government. A woman can always take an abortion inducing medication, leave the country, find assistance in an alley, and so on. Who can say what was a naturally occurring miscarriage or a willful abortion?
Note: It is problematic to pass legislation government cannot or will not enforce.
Somewhere around 20 weeks (5 months), the fetus can survive outside the womb. At this point, the fetus should be deemed a “baby,” and the rights of the mother should be transferred to it.
Note: The specific point of demarcation when the fetus is deemed to be a “baby” will be established by Congress upon consultation with a panel of medical experts.
We must put this issue to rest so the country and millions of women are set free to weigh other important matters. As such, the right of “choice” for an adequate period of time must become unassailable and permanent.
…and advance policies and practices that reflect an enlightened and moral people.
Again, this is an expansive topic. We will include here the most important points so voters can rest assured there will be no surprises.
People around the world will always be looking for the nation that is dominant. This is a natural law, and it drives all species.
Note: This explains why sporting events are so compelling and why competition in general is addictive.
At present, America is the dominant nation of the world. Consequently, it must remain dominant to insure world peace. If America should falter, the contender nations will become restless. If America should fail, there will be a reordering of nations, resulting in global conflict and the suffering, starvation and death of hundreds of millions of people. If we truly care about world peace, then we must work to keep America strong.
Note: The disdain people have for America is due largely to America not performing as “the dominant male of the group” of nations. In specific, too many Americans are dependent, fat or lazy, social problems are broader and deeper than ever before, America is among the worst with regard to academic performance, we have the largest prison population per capita in the world, the national debt is over 18 trillion dollars, and the political system is exorbitantly expensive, noisy and ineffective. How can we expect anyone to respect us?
To foster peace and cooperation among nations, we must become worthy of respect and be regarded once again as truly dominant. Specifically, we must resolve our social and financial problems and project we are an enlightened people that live by an elevated moral code. To that end, we must achieve the following goals:
We must get out of the business of death.
We will end execution by instituting a different kind of “death sentence.” Instead of physical death, we will advocate the sentence of “walking death,” in which convicted murders and perpetrators of other heinous crimes are deprived of any form of pleasure (to include communication with others, hot and cold food, coffee, music, salt, candy, meat, soda, cigarettes, reading, writing, and so on).
Government must not fund abortions directly.
Note: The reason why celebrities will not hold a fund-raiser for abortions is because doing so would sully their name. Those who think America should sully its reputation don't love America all that much.
We must perform as a confident, united, efficient and consistent republic.
Putting forth highly visible concrete platforms and having the respective party representatives stand on them will end the campaigning, fundraising, pandering, special interests, noise, division, waste, fraud, unresolved social problems and exploding debt resulting from the present political system.

We must reestablish marriage and the two parent family as the cornerstone of the American civilization.
The experiment is over. Nationally speaking, two parents are necessary to keep America solvent. Although single parents have proven to be capable of raising children to become service providing, taxpaying assets of society, too many children are being lost to drugs, crime and violent gangs.
Note: Remember, every child we lose to drugs and violence requires 6 to 8 taxpayers just to break even. See Plank #4 for details.
We must resolve our social and financial problems and excel at everything we do.
We must become #1 in education, put to rest the right of choice regarding abortion, settle the gay and lesbian marriage controversy for good, get out of the business of death, reduce the problem prison population, and so on.
The stated goals are not arbitrary. They are necessary to insure world peace and a clean and healthy environment. Global conflict and all of its ramifications are the consequences of America not appearing to be the dominant nation of the world.
The stated goals are also not empty promises. Each is assured because of the discovery of Gravity Theory, resulting in a new understanding of human nature (a change in psychology).
