There are two opposing views of human nature.  One is popular, the other is correct.  Coined Spring Theory and Gravity Theory, they are summarized here.  Amazingly, this abbreviated explanation holds the key to solving America's social, financial, and political problems.

Spring Theory

Most people believe that human nature works on us like a spring, continuously lifting us above the animals.  According to Spring Theory, human beings are predisposed to rise up.  If we perform poorly, it is because negative social conditions weigh on us, pushing us down.  They compress "the spring," causing us to behave badly.  It follows that citizens will automatically elevate and perform admirably if we remove the social hindrances.  Although Spring Theory seems logical, is widely accepted, and rarely disputed, it is wrong.  It turns out that "gravity" better describes human nature.

Gravity Theory

According to Gravity Theory, human beings are not inclined to spring up.  On the contrary, we are predisposed only to resolve our discomfort, just like the "lower" animals.  The cause of bad behavior is not negative social conditions.  It is the relentless downward pull of our innate animalistic tendencies.

For decades, Congress has designed public programs while working from Spring Theory.  Based on this false assumption, it has unwittingly incorporated measures of comfort into the programs it designed.  These comforts would be beneficial if Spring Theory were correct.
